What do the categories mean?

It's all well and good to put games into categories, but sometimes a game is not easy to put into any category - or perhaps it seems to go into more than one category. Here's what our categories mean and some insight into how we assign them to the games.

Adventure Games

Adventure games can include some fighting, but should focus more on exploration and developing a character over time as you play. Puzzle games that require you to find things and manage a changing inventory will also appear in this category.

Arcade Games

Arcade games are usually Flash versions of the classics. They can be of almost any style but all are generally based upon a game that first appeared in the 1970's or 1980's. Games that closely resemble a popular game from this period can also appear here.

Fighting Games

If the game is simply about fighting and killing, but without guns, then it belongs here. Some fighting games also allow for character development and even a diverse inventory of weapons, but unless those aspects are balanced with the pure carnage it will always be listed as a fighting game.

Puzzle Games

Puzzle games can come in two types - those that require quick reflexes and those that require a keen mind. Puzzle games generally do not even imply any violence or killing and games that feature those will be listed elsewhere.

Shooting Games

Games that involve guns, cannons, laser beams, or any other projectile belong here. Extremely simple games or games that are based on a classic arcade game might alternately end up in the "Simple" or "Arcade" sections, but otherwise this is the place.

Simple Games

Simple games are just that - simple. Maybe they have only one one or two options for controlling game-play. Maybe they are easy to win or nearly impossible to lose. Whatever the reason, they're clearly simple games. That doesn't always mean they're bad, however - checkers is a simple game but still fun to play.

Strategy Games

Strategy games are like puzzles with a violent theme. You will have to manage your resources and overcome a series of difficulties that will require careful planning and cleverness. These games can be some of the longest, and also some of the hardest.

Weird Games

There's really two types of weird games - those that really defy classification and those that have unusual themes or subject matter. When we don't know where to put a game, or if we think it's content might not appeal to everyone, we put it here.
